One of the most compelling reasons to write a book is to share your passion with others. If there’s something in life that you care deeply about — an issue, hobby or lifestyle choice — you might be ready to take it to the next level.

Identify Your Passion

The first question for any writer is: “What to write about?” Your inner voice is calling you to write, and you are ready and willing. But where do you start? What story do you want your book to tell? What insight do you want to pass on to readers?

Here are some questions to get you thinking:

  • What activity can you spend hours on without it ever feeling like work?
  • What do your friends, family members and co-workers tell you you’re good at?
  • What topics of conversation are you most excited to jump into?
  • What advice do your loved ones turn to you for?
  • What events have shaped your outlook on life?

If you love nothing more than playing, imagining and learning with your kids, you might make a great children’s book author. If your friends rave about the food you make, maybe it’s time to write a cookbook. Do your co-workers envy your ability to balance work and home life? Perhaps there’s a fantasy-filled adventure book in you. If your life has been changed by a unique set of circumstances, you might want to share your inspiring story in a memoir.

Write a Book with Passion

Once you know what you want to write about, it’s time to get to work. But how do you convey your passion to readers? Here are three tips for how to write with a passion that will excite and engage your audience:

Make your work a labor of love.

Each time you sit down to write, remember the passion that’s at the source of your work. Stay true to the enthusiasm that got you into this, especially at times when working on your manuscript gets hard.

Make your words jump off the page.

You want people to be as excited about reading your work as you are about sharing it. If you keep your writing energetic and entertaining, your readers will feel an authentic connection to your passion.

Make it personal.

Don’t just write facts. Share how your stories, lessons or tips have influenced your own life. Let your personality and experience shine through. This will help readers see the true value in your book.

If you can identify your passion and then convey that passion with passion to readers, you’ll be in a great position to spread your message and touch peoples’ lives.
